Nick Clegg may cut a rather sorrowful figure these days, but he can still rely on the support of one of his oldest friends, Helena Bonham Carter.
“I don’t feel sorry for him,” the actress tells me at the first night party for Sir Cameron Mackintosh’s new musical Betty Blue Eyes. “I think he is doing well in an impossible situation.”
Miss Bonham Carter has known Clegg since they attended Westminster School together, most recently providing her support to the Deputy Prime Minister’s ‘yes’ campaign for the Alternative Vote.
She is, however, reluctant to discuss his current state of mind after he confessed that he feels like a human “punch bag” and that he “cries regularly to music” in the evenings.
“I don’t really want to talk about it,” she said. Miss Bonham Carter, and her husband, Tim Burton, could not be closer to the heart of Government: they spend New Year’s Eve at Chequers with David and Samantha Cameron.
