Helena Announced as Member of Holocaust Commission

To coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day, David Cameron today announced the membership of the Holocaust Commission, who will investigate ways to educate future generations of Britons about the Shoah. Other members include Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Natasha Kaplinsky, Michael Gove and Ed Balls.

The Commission, chaired by Jewish Leadership Council chairman Mick Davis, met today at the QEII Conference Centre in Westminster to meet with survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides, as well as ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, and civic and religious leaders.

I am very honoured to be asked to join this commission and do so in particular memory of those members of my family who died in the Holocaust and as an inherited responsibility to my grandfather who made a significant personal sacrifice to save hundreds of lives.

It is our generations’ legacy to create a living memory that will survive the survivors and forever remind future generations of the inhumanity man is capable of committing to its own kind

Helena’s grandfather, Eduardo Propper de Callejón was honoured posthumously with the Righteous Among The Nations award in 2008 for facilitating the escape of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. Disobeying direct orders, he issued visas to refugees while serving as First Secretary of the Spanish Embassy.
