Helena Bonham Carter made her name as the quintessential English rose in period dramas, but then subverted this image with darker roles. In the wake of separating from her partner Tim Burton – who has produced her latest film, Alice Through the Looking Glass – she discusses love, loss and living next-door to the ex.
Subscribers will receive a limited edition cover, which can be viewed in our gallery. Helena wears a dress by Stella McCartney, Burberry coat, cat mask by Piers Atkinson, and Gillian Horsup earrings.
Helena once again hosted a fundraiser for Save the Children, which has been an annual event since 2012. Her co-host was Sir Alan Parker, and the event was held at The Roundhouse in London. A Night of Motown raised an incredible £2.1m. Helena is wearing Stella McCartney.
Over 360 guests were transported from Motown’s roots in sixties’ Detroit, through to the modern artists who are still inspired by this incredible blend of soul, R’n’B, gospel and pop.
Performances featured Mary Wilson, founder of The Supremes, the legendary Tito Jackson from the Jackson 5, soul-pop sensation John Newman, singer songwriter Lemar and a surprise return performance by Beverley Knight who had the whole room on their feet.
Offering inspiring stories about Save the Children’s work were Sir Alan Parker, Chair of Save the Children International, and Dora Loewenstein, who spoke movingly about her visit to Zaatari refugee camp.
The night’s fundraising included live and silent auctions, with fantastic prizes including Stevie Wonder’s very own harmonica, original artwork by Tim Burton and the chance to watch an England football match with none other than David Beckham.
I have added 20 photos to the gallery.
Photographer Rick McGinnis has shared more portraits of Helena on his website. Last year, McGinnis wrote a blog post about his experience of photographing Helena in Tonoronto in January 1996, which included previously unseen outtakes of a photo session for Now Magazine. He recently wrote about the rediscovery of some old negatives from the same session, and share them in this blog post.
As I recalled in my previous post, this was one of my favorite shoots from my time at NOW magazine, because my subject – a notorious eccentric – responded to my camera with a real performance, a tiny woman in baggy clothes, running through a gamut of expressions while sunk in the depths of an enormous hotel chair.
